Child Therapy in Iowa
Developmentally appropriate mental health support that helps children express, understand and navigate their emotions and experiences.
Supporting Children's Mental Health
Children do not always have the words to explain what they are feeling or experiencing. Changes in behavior, emotions, sleep, school, relationships, or routines can sometimes be signs that a child needs additional support. Play therapy approaches provide a developmentally appropriate space for children to communicate, build skills, and feel supported.
When Your Child May Benefit from Support
Families may seek therapy for anxiety, sadness, behavior changes, emotional outbursts, grief, trauma, school concerns, friendship difficulties, family changes, self-esteem, or difficulty adjusting to stressful experiences.
How Child Therapy Can Help
Depending on the child's age and needs, therapy may use play and creative art activities as these tools provide children the opportunity to express themselves using their own language - play. This is in addition to conversation, skill-building, and other developmentally appropriate approaches. Treatment may help children identify emotions, develop coping skills, communicate needs, and strengthen relationships.
Our Approach
At Iowa Family Counseling, therapy is individualized and collaborative. Our clinicians draw from evidence-based and person-centered approaches based on each client's needs, strengths, experiences, developmental level, and goals.
Working With Children and Families
Caregiver involvement can be an important part of child therapy. The level of involvement depends on the child's age, needs, treatment goals, and circumstances, while respecting the therapeutic relationship and applicable privacy requirements.
