EMDR Therapy in Iowa

A trauma-focused therapy approach designed to help people process distressing experiences and memories.

What Is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured psychotherapy approach designed to help people process distressing memories and experiences that may continue to affect their thoughts, emotions, behaviors or physical responses.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or other forms of alternating stimulation, while working with memories, thoughts, emotions and sensations associated with difficult experiences.

EMDR does not require you to describe every detail of a difficult experience aloud. Your therapist will work collaboratively with you to establish preparation and coping strategies before moving into memory processing.

EMDR May Help With

How EMDR Therapy Works

EMDR therapy is designed to help the brain process distressing experiences so that memories can become less disruptive in the present.

Treatment typically includes preparation and stabilization before trauma processing begins. Your therapist may help you develop grounding, emotional regulation and coping skills before deciding together whether you are ready to work directly with difficult memories.

EMDR treatment is individualized, and the amount of preparation and processing needed varies from person to person.

Our Approach

At Iowa Family Counseling, EMDR is provided within an individualized and collaborative treatment plan. Your therapist will take time to understand your history, current concerns, strengths, goals and readiness before beginning EMDR processing.

EMDR may be used on its own or integrated with other therapeutic approaches depending on your needs. You remain an active participant throughout treatment, and your therapist will work with you to determine the pace and focus of therapy.

Is EMDR Therapy Right for You?

EMDR may be an option for people whose past experiences continue to affect their emotions, relationships, thoughts or everyday life.

Before beginning EMDR processing, your therapist will assess whether the approach is appropriate for your individual needs and discuss what you can expect. Preparation is an important part of EMDR therapy, and processing does not begin until you and your therapist determine that you are ready.
