THERAPY AND COUNSELING
SERVICES
INDIVIDUAL THERAPY
Individual counseling (sometimes called psychotherapy or talk therapy) is a process in which clients work one-on-one with a trained mental health clinician in a safe, caring, and confidential environment.
Counseling allows individuals to explore their feelings, beliefs and behaviors, work through challenging or influential memories, identify aspects of their lives that they would like to change, better understand themselves and others, set personal goals and work toward desired change.

Some common presenting concerns include symptoms of anxiety, depression, anger, trauma, suicidal ideation, relationship conflict, stress, somatic/physical, grief, LGBTQIA+ & more. Our clinicians meet with clients of all ages - from 3 to 103!

EMDR THERAPY
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a mental health treatment that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the resolution of mental health symptoms from adverse life experiences. EMDR therapy can be thought of as a physiologically based therapy that helps a person see upsetting experiences in a new and less disturbing way.

Our Therapist, Elisa, has completed Basic Training Levels I and II in EMDR and has received additional training, including implementing with children.
PLAY THERAPY
Our clinical therapists working with children utilize play therapy techniques and approaches, understanding that developmentally, they may not benefit from traditional talk therapy. This approach allows children to engage in therapeutic play activities (including sand tray, art therapy and other expressive arts techniques), helping them to express themselves and cope with any emotional or behavioral issues they may be struggling with. While our therapists may not be registered play therapists, they have the necessary training and experience to provide high-quality, effective treatment.

Sand tray therapy is a unique form of creative and experiential counseling that allows clients to communicate by creating a world out of representative figures in a sandbox. In this way, we’re able to access the unconscious, addressing underlying issues and trauma. This work taps into clients’ natural ability to heal themselves in a safe and contained environment, while the therapist holds space for the client to create and process their own world in the sand. The answers lie within us, and sand tray therapy helps us uncover this knowledge.
Iowa Family Counseling provides these approaches as part of our school-based therapy services and in our home office's dedicated play room.

TELE-THERAPY
Iowa Family Counseling can provide convenient tele-therapy services to clients across the state of Iowa, through a HIPAA compliant program through our practice's electronic health record program, SimplePractice.
Our therapists are able to provide quality care within a convenient online format that is designed to meet the needs of all clients.

We may be able to coordinate scheduling, space and technology with a child's school to be able to offer this service during the day at their school as well.
SCHOOL-BASED THERAPY
Life is busy. It can be difficult to find the time to get your child into therapy. Often, ensuring your child gets to appointments means taking off work, or sacrificing other activities. We understand that it is not always easy to take time away from life to go to therapy, that is why we offer school-based therapy services! These sessions look very similar to what we would be doing within our therapy office, including the playroom and virtually/tele-therapy.

Currently, Iowa Family Counseling provides this service within a Highland and Mid-Prairie Community School Districts.
NURSING-FACILITY BASED THERAPY
At Iowa Family Counseling, we are dedicated to meeting the unique needs of all individuals, including long-term facility residents. Our counseling services are tailored to this specific population, and we work closely with the facility's social services director and director of nursing to ensure seamless coordination of care. Our goal is to provide compassionate effective support that enhances the quality of life for those we serve.

Currently, Iowa Family Counseling provides this service at Pleasantview Home in Kalona, Iowa.
