Trauma Therapy in Iowa
Compassionate, trauma-informed support for healing, resilience and meaningful change.
What Is Trauma?
Difficult or overwhelming experiences can affect how we think, feel, relate to others and respond to the world around us. Sometimes these effects are noticeable soon after an experience, while other times they may emerge or become clearer much later.
Trauma can affect everyone differently. You might feel anxious or constantly on alert, avoid reminders of what happened, feel disconnected from yourself or others, experience difficult memories, or notice changes in your emotions, relationships, sleep or sense of safety.
At Iowa Family Counseling, we provide a supportive, trauma-informed environment where you can explore your experiences at a pace that respects your needs, boundaries and goals.
When Past Experiences Continue to Affect the Present
How Trauma Therapy Can Help
Trauma therapy can provide a supportive space to better understand how past experiences may be affecting your thoughts, emotions, relationships and responses in the present.
Depending on your needs and goals, therapy may focus on developing coping and grounding skills, strengthening emotional regulation, increasing a sense of safety, understanding trauma-related patterns and gradually processing difficult experiences when you are ready.
Healing does not require forgetting what happened. Therapy can help you develop new ways of relating to your experiences while building resilience, connection and a greater sense of choice in your life.
Our Approach
Trauma therapy is not one-size-fits-all. At Iowa Family Counseling, treatment is individualized and collaborative, with attention to each person's experiences, strengths, needs and readiness.
Our clinicians may draw from approaches such as EMDR, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), person-centered therapy, play-based approaches and other trauma-informed strategies. Your therapist will work with you to determine an approach that fits your individual needs and goals.
Trauma Therapy for Children, Teens & Adults
Trauma can affect people at any age. Iowa Family Counseling provides trauma-informed therapy for children, adolescents and adults who have experienced difficult, distressing or overwhelming life experiences.
For children and adolescents, therapy may incorporate developmentally appropriate play, creative activities and skill-building, with caregiver involvement when appropriate. For adults, therapy can provide space to understand the impact of past experiences, strengthen coping skills and work toward personally meaningful goals.
